Very interesting essay. I only know Otranto as the 'word' we use when we are doing spelling---like the Alfa, Charlie, Foxtrot system but with the names of towns instead. It must be a wonderful feeing to be so rooted in a place. In Milan there is a chapel with a similar arrangement of bones, but there is no evidence they were martyrs---perhaps plague victims, or just the reordering of a lot of bones from graves that had to be moved to make way for newcomers. Looking forward to the next installment.
