Benevento was a place for a crucial battle in 1266 after which Charles I of Anjou vanquished the Swabian monarchy from Southern Italy, and settled itself in the Kingdom of Naples. I drive near it about once a year as I drive from Naples toward Puglia. Beautiful place, beautiful mountains, but those folks sure were hardy and resourceful.
